Revenge & Meaningful Travel - 2021 Travel Trends

If you're active on social media you're bound to have heard about it, but what exactly is Revenge Travel?

And revenge from who and what exactly?

It was one of the biggest anticipated travel trends when last June planes started to fly again around Europe and travelers went off to their favorite places.

If in a normal year, one would take a family holiday and 2 breaks, after nearly 2 years of pandemic, with the disruption of having to repeatdily cancel holidays, the majority of us feel we missed out on a lot and that we are owed big time by life itslef.

So this year we want to make up for lost time and book if not double as much as a normal year holiday, at least 30% more.

We've seen some of our guest twice already, once with family or loved one and then with friends, and that in not even 6 months.

And what about once visitors get to the destination?

Is their behavior the same as before?

Not at all!

We all refer to anything in general as in BEFORE and AFTER

Why?

Because we've been deprived of so much, now we want to make up for it!

We want to travel to be meaningful.

So if BEFORE guests would eat out every other day, now they eat out twice a day

If they would spend their days sunbathing in the pool, the beach and take a wonder around the prom or port at night and have an icecream, now they take a day trip with an eye opening experience like Wine Tasting with typical Andalusian Lunch in Ronda, tuna fishing, dolphin watching on the Gibraltar strait or a walk around the Old Town with a local guide followed by olive oil tasting or a tapas tour to try the real tapas rather than the usual tortilla and ensaladilla everyone else has.

And also taking advantage of the time off to try something new.

So more holidays and more meaningful, either for the actual experience or the persons you share it with are the travel trends of 2021 and will certainly carry on into the beginning of 2022.

How To Be More Sustainable When Traveling

We have been hearing the S word for a couple of years now and we now are all more conscious that we need to do something to save the planet from us.

The various lockdowns have proved how harmful us humans are to the planet earth, with pollution, extra waste and tons of plastic, so we must really take action.

When it comes to travel, the 2 most sustainable messages are:

- Reuse the towels in your accommodation
- Donate 1 or 2 € to prevent the carbon emission when buying your plane tickets

But we believe we can do much much more

Because an important part of sustainable tourism can be supporting small local businesses, how you spend your money can make or break a destination, community or small town.

When it comes to transportation, unless you are taking a near to home staycation (which will quickly go out of fashion as soon as international travel goes back to being easy) you have no much choice rather than hopping on a plane.

But once you get to the destination, you can do a lot for the local small businesses, by making the right choices and making sure the money you spend there, stay there in the destination and doesn’t get lost in huge companies or multinational holdings, leaving nothing for the local people.

When you spend in a local business, you help local people make money and they will in turn have more money to spend locally, spinning the wheel and making the destination grow and develop.

When you spend in big enterprises (like big hotel chains) the majority of your spending goes to pay the bonuses of the managers that live far away in big cities and a very small % is left to local people, that are usually paid the bare minimum and in worse working conditions.

SO HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?

- Do not buy holiday packages, but choose your accommodation thoughtfully: a nice holiday rental or a small B&B, these sort of business are locally owned and employ local people.

And most importantly BOOK DIRECT with the accommodation, they will give you the best price, payment plan and conditions. Forget about the various holiday portals like AirBnb or Booking.

- Shop in small shops and local markets, avoid the shopping malls and large supermarkets, you will find unique products: fresh fish, meat, organic fruits and vegetables as well as homemade local products that you can take back as souvenirs (soaps, olive oil, embroided clothes, etc.)

- Rent a car or a scooter from a local firm versus an international enterprise.

- If you need a transfer from the airport or train station, ask your accommodation provider, they will surely recommend a reliable local taxi company.

- The same goes for day trips, experiences, when you want to rent a bike, kayak, bars & restaurant bookings, etc.

Most of the locally owned bars, restaurants and beach clubs use locally sourced products that do not need any transportation, so here we are back to cutting the carbon emissions.

Ask the local experts, mostly bloggers and influencers, research online prior to arrival and make sure that the majority of your money is spent on local product and with local people.

They are now in need of your support more than ever after this terrible year.

The big international enterprises already have so much and do not need anymore.

Most of them had bonuses even in 2020, when almost all of their staff has been made redundant or is living on state benefits.

You can make such a big difference when going on holiday just by making the right choices.

Let’s all be more conscious and Retravel better.

In his book, THE LOOPTAIL which he gave out to us FOR FREE, he explains how he got started in travel and how he reinvented the wheel of tours and activities, deciding it was time to GIVE BACK and that tourism can make a huge difference in a destination, small city or community.

By doing so, many communities that were dying are now thriving, youngster are staying in the villages rather then moving to big cities as they are involved with their neighbors and families in travel and tourism.

Marbella has always been one of the most after destinations within Europe, but even more over the last year, as our realities went upside down and our priorities shifted completely.

The freedom we once took for granted was taken away from us overnight and while we were forced into lockdowns, outdoor living became the highest of luxuries.

The Rise Of The Digital Nomad Family

Up until 2019 the Digital Nomads were perceived as some lazy freaks, who pretended to be working from paradisiac beaches while showing up on Instragram lying on an hammock with an Apple Mac while sipping water straight from a coconut.

And the Digital Families, as some crazy heartless parents who were putting their kids in danger by taking them to remote destinations with no drinking water or proper health care and depriving them of the "normal school education", stability and routines.

People in general were failing to understand how one could have a decent job and do proper work from somewhere rather than a fancy corporate office or teach their kids as well as, if not better than, the schools.

As someone who has been a digital nomad before the term was even invented, and spent the mayority of the working life sitting in a cafe on an inflatable ball, and understood the importance of "kids copy what you do not what you tell them to do" I can tell you none of the above is true and that to be a Digital Nomad (single, couple or family) you do not need to go to Bali, Fiji, South America or Byron Bay, the Spanish coast in perfect, easy and affordable.

So in March 2020 our world was put upside down, the freedom we took for granted disappeared overnight, we had to adapt quickly in a sea of uncertainties, work and learn from home became the new normal and surprise suprise, the people that had previously worked remotely from home and other places, were used to flexible hours and thinking outside the box, embraced the new normal with less stress and anxiety, transmitting peace and calm to their kids.

The corporate lot embraced the work and teach from home less keenly, but soon found that it was a perfectly acceptable way of life and since then many corporation have introduced the "work from home as long as you like" formula.

And when the borders reopened in June many of them tought: If Work From Home can be Work From Any Home, then we might as well go somewhere with better weather, where we can enjoy outdoor activities and take care of our mental health.

All this became even more relevant as summer ended and the rainy autumn made his appearence in the Northern countries, the grey skys not improving the mood, the school and offices that weren't going to reopen, our new normal being Zoom, Meet and Teams, so we started to see different types of families coming to us to spend a couple of months, get some winter sun and vitamin sea with the only requirements of reliable fast WiFi and well stocked kitchen to cook healthy meals for the kids.

Different Kinds Of Digital Nomads Families

- Daddy works and Mummy Walks: Couple with one or 2 babies where he sits in and works and from the beachfront office while she walks on the prom with the babies, plays with them on the beach and spends quality time with them while seeing them grow healthily under the sun.

- Mum & Dad take turns: Couple with one or two small kids that need help with their homework, so while one works the other assists the little ones with their assignments and then change over. They can each enjoy a space in the apartments without disturbing and interrupting.

- The Zoom Family: Couple with one or two grown up kids, they are all self sufficient with their own device and headset to attend to what they have to, so they only have to choose where from, the lounge, the bedroom or the terrace, each in their place and to their own thing.

And when work and school is over, then the fun begins...

Homemade lunch on the sunny terrace or sandwich picnick on the beach, afternoon run on the boardwalk or roof top yoga, sunbathing by the pool or hiking up the mountain, cycling to Puerto Banus or a paddle surf trip to enjoy the sunset?

You only have to choose...

Do you have to be brave to pack up your family and hop an a flight ?

Of course, but think of all the advantages: sunshine, warm temperatures, outdoor activities, wearing T-Shirts rather than jackets, your kids will have a tan in winter and so on.

If things go wrong, here in Marbella you'll find the top health care professionals and facilities

It will be a lifetime experience for you as a family and who knows? it may give you courage to travel further on next winter and get to discover far away paradises, as Spain is a very safe and normal destination!

Otherwise, it will be a treasured memory that will last with you for the years to come, an adventure you will share as a family and it will bond you in a way staying at home never will.

Doing something different and out of the ordinary will show your kids different aspects of your personality that do not come out normally.

You'll have more time to talk, to reassure them in this crazy situation, to bring some stability and normality, to share with them values and concept you wouldn't otherwise.

And what about the babies? Well, they can learn to crawl and walk on the sand (apparently extremely healthy for their little feet) , the little ones can learn count with shells or write their names on the sand with a stick.

Our personal experience:

Both of us traveled extensively before we met and then carried on together, as we met very far away from our own homes.

So when the little ones came to us, it was only natural we kept travelling with them and show them different places and pass on our passion to discover new things and places.

And because we worked as a freelance real estate brokers, before becoming holiday rental managers and travel planners, we could work from anywhere, just with a mobile phone and a laptop, but it wasn't always easy to find good signals, so we always ended up in the hotel lobbies bonding with other digital nomads while getting the work done.

It was the beginning of the coworking spaces...

And we enjoyed it so much that even now, that all apartments and hotel rooms have wifi, we still prefer to sit in the common spaces or cafes, have a chat with the owners over coffee and other travellers, because this is the true meaning of travel: belong anywhere, blend in, bond, experience and make friends along the way.

And the kids, well, they're now very much grown up and having always seen us get work done anywhere, have embraced the study and learn from anywhere with very much gusto.

So, from our family to yours, embrace the opportunity this alternation of normal have given us and do something different, even if you do not come to Marbella to see us, go somewhere else and live an adventure!

No need to just belive what we say, you can hear it all from THEM!

Why you should consider coming to Marbella for at least a long weekend during low season.

It's February and most of you in the North of Europe can't wait for the cold to go and see the first sprouts in the garden announcing spring. As things are it doesn't look like it'll happen very soon though...

So why don't you grab a last minute flight surely on good offers with our friends Ryanair & co and come to spend a few days in sunny Marbella?

Temperatures are between 10 and 20, sun is shining, many restaurants and shops are open (with no ques required) , the boardwalk is clear to enjoy it strolling, cycling or sitting in one of its many cafes just watching the world go by and recharge your batteries for the months to come?

Winter sunrises and sunsets are the best and most clear, plus you don't have to wake up extremely early as the sun is now coming out at 8.15 and you can take the ooportunity to do a bit of outdoor sport or have an energizing morning walk.

Watching the sun emerging from the sea is an amazing and fulfilling experience and after you could try one of the many healthy breakfast options on the boardwalk.

Should you have to work while over here you can do so from the terrace or the living room of your becahfront apartment and get a bit of sun on your face while you are at it, as all the apartments now have super fast Fibre Optic WiFi.
